Chapter 10

Hadassah hurried into the village. It was always best to go to market early in the morning, but the morning was half gone already. She hoped they would still have everything she needed. The first place she went was where Caleb’s mother sold cheese.

“Hadassah! It has been too long since I saw you. Is it true that you are now working for Basmat?”

Hadassah tried to smile. “Yes. And that is why I am here today. I need two chunks of your best cheese, please.”

Caleb’s mother looked the cheeses over. “I think these two are the best.”

“Thank you. Shalom.” Hadassah didn’t wait for the woman to respond before scurrying to the next place. The butcher. How did she pick what she needed here? She had never done it before and she had no idea what to look for or what exactly would make Basmat the most happy.

“Not that she’s ever truly happy,” she muttered to herself.

As she carefully looked at each cut of meat the butcher had out, she glimpsed a familiar tunic coming toward her. Her mother. Oh, how she wanted to go to her. Run over and embrace her. But she couldn’t. She looked at herself. Her clothes were little more than rags, and dirty ones at that. She couldn’t let her mother see her that way.

She turned around and quickly talked to the butcher and bought whatever it was he suggested then rushed toward one of the many bakers. She had to get three loaves of a certain type of bread that Basmat liked. The first baker didn’t have them. Neither did the second one. She had just sold her last loaf. The third baker had the three she needed. As she waited for the change, she glanced around quickly. Her mother was still a few stalls away. If she could sneak past her on the way back to Basmat’s, she might just make it.

Hadassah worked her way back. Toward her mother. She kept her head down and tilted away from where she had last seen Jerusha. She saw the tunic out of the corner of her eye and started to breathe again.

“Hadassah? Is that you?”

She cringed at her mother’s voice and turned. “Shalom, Ema.”

“It is you!” Jerusha threw herself at Hadassah and embraced her tightly. “What are you doing here? I thought one of the other servants usually came.”

Hadassah shrugged. “I had to do it today. How are you and Abba?”

“We miss you.”

Hadassah smiled sadly. “Gidal and I miss you as well.”

Jerusha put an arm around Hadassah’s shoulders. “I don’t want to keep you too long, but can we talk for a few minutes?”

Hadassah pursed her lips and nodded.

Jerusha led her a little bit away from the crowds. “How are you and Gidal?”

Hadassah kept her eyes down. “We are surviving.”

Jerusha lifted Hadassah’s chin with her finger. “Are you really? I can tell by just a glance at you that something is going on.”

Hadassah’s chin quivered and tears threatened to pool over her eyelids. “I don’t know how much longer we can stay there.
